Video Frame Extractor

Open your own video, scrub to any moment, and export that exact frame as a full-resolution image. The file never leaves your browser.

Unlimited — runs entirely in your browser

How It Works

How to use the video frame extractor

01

Open your video

Pick a local file. It is read by your browser directly and never uploaded anywhere.

02

Scrub to the frame

Use the timeline or step frame by frame to land on exactly the moment you want.

03

Export as JPG or PNG

The frame is captured at your video's full resolution — not a scaled-down preview.

Extracting a frame from your own footage

A video is a sequence of still images played quickly. Extracting a frame means taking one of those stills and saving it as a picture — at whatever resolution your video actually is, so a 4K video yields a 4K image.

This is different from a YouTube thumbnail downloader, which fetches an image someone else's video already published. This works on files on your own machine: footage you shot, a screen recording, an export you have not uploaded yet.

It runs entirely in the browser, which is not a marketing line but a technical consequence: your browser can already decode video and draw it to a canvas, so there is nothing a server would add. Your file is never transmitted, which makes this usable on footage you would not upload to a random website.

Why Use This Tool

What the video frame extractor gives you

Full-resolution capture

The exported image matches your video's real resolution, not the size of the preview player.

Nothing is uploaded

The file is decoded locally by your browser. It never touches a server, so private footage stays private.

JPG or PNG

JPG for photographic frames and small files, PNG for screen recordings, text and graphics.

Frame-by-frame stepping

Step one frame at a time to land on exactly the right expression instead of near it.

Unlimited and instant

No upload wait, no file cap, no account.

Good for covers

The fastest way to pull a cover image for a Reel, Short or TikTok out of the clip itself.

Common questions

How do I get a still image from a video?

Open the file here, scrub to the moment, and export. The frame is captured at your video's full resolution.

Is this the same as a screenshot?

Better. A screenshot captures your screen — so it is limited to your display resolution and includes whatever scaling the player applied. This reads the actual decoded frame, so a 4K video gives you a 4K image.

Does my video get uploaded?

No. Your browser decodes the file locally and draws the frame to a canvas. Nothing is sent anywhere, which is why there is no file size limit.

JPG or PNG?

JPG for camera footage — smaller files and no visible difference. PNG for screen recordings, slides or anything with text and sharp edges, where JPG compression creates visible artefacts.

What formats can I open?

Whatever your browser can play — MP4 and WebM universally, MOV in most current browsers.

Can I extract every frame at once?

No, this is for picking individual frames. Bulk extraction of thousands of images is a job for desktop software.

Picking a cover frame by hand, once per clip.

Fine for one video. For fifteen clips off one recording it is fifteen scrubs through footage you have already watched. ShortsHero selects a strong opening frame for every clip it produces.
