How It Works
A watch link, a youtu.be short link, or a Shorts URL — all work.
All available resolutions appear at once, each with its dimensions labelled.
Right-click to save, or use the download button for the full-size version.
YouTube generates a fixed set of thumbnail sizes for every video and serves them from predictable URLs built out of the video's ID. That is why this tool needs no API key and has no rate limit worth mentioning — it constructs the image address from the link you paste.
The available sizes are consistent: a 120×90 default, a 320×180 medium, a 480×360 high, a 640×480 standard, and a 1280×720 maxres. The last one only exists if the uploader provided a thumbnail at least that large, which is why some older or lower-effort videos top out at 640×480.
The usual honest reasons to grab one: studying what thumbnails work in your niche, checking how your own looks at the size it is actually displayed, or needing a reference frame. Reusing someone else's thumbnail on your own video is a copyright problem, not a grey area.
Why Use This Tool
See all available resolutions rather than guessing which URL exists.
No login, no daily cap. The tool builds an image URL — there is nothing to meter.
1280×720 is shown whenever the uploader supplied a thumbnail that large.
Shorts URLs work the same way as regular watch links.
Nothing is stored and nothing is tracked.
The fastest way to study what thumbnails are working in your niche.
Reference
Every video has the first four. The HD version depends on what the uploader supplied.
Paste the video URL here and take the 1280×720 version if it is shown. Where it is missing, the uploader's original thumbnail was smaller than HD and YouTube never generated one.
The maxres version is only created when the uploaded thumbnail was at least 1280×720. Older videos and auto-generated thumbnails often top out at 640×480.
Yes. Shorts have thumbnails like any other video, and Shorts URLs are accepted.
No. Thumbnails are copyrighted works belonging to whoever made them. Downloading for reference or study is fine; republishing as your own is infringement.
Yes, and unlimited. The tool constructs a public image URL from the video ID — there is no per-use cost to pass on.
No. Only publicly viewable videos have publicly reachable thumbnails.
Grabbing a thumbnail is research. Choosing a strong opening frame for every clip you publish is production — and ShortsHero picks one automatically for each clip it cuts.
