• Create an account (email address, full name via Clerk authentication)
• Make a purchase (payment info is processed securely — we never store card details)
• Begin a checkout process — your email address is collected at checkout initiation

Content You Upload & Generate

When you use our service, we store:

• Videos you upload for processing (stored on AWS S3)
• Generated short clips and their transcriptions (stored on AWS S3)
• Caption styles, editor settings, and project metadata
• Virality scores and AI analysis results per clip

Usage Information

We automatically collect:

• Log data (IP address, browser type, operating system)
• Device information
• Usage statistics (features used, videos processed, credits consumed)
• Cookies and similar tracking technologies
• Performance and error data

Payment Information

We do not store your complete credit card information. Payment details are handled securely by our payment processor (Creem), and we receive only transaction details (amount, status, transaction ID) for accounting and customer support purposes.

We use the information we collect to:

• Provide, operate, and maintain the shortshero service
• Process your transactions and manage your credit balance
• Analyze your uploaded videos to detect and extract engaging clips
• Generate transcriptions, captions, and virality scores
• Store your video projects so you can access and edit them later
• Improve and optimize our AI detection algorithms and user experience
• Develop new features and expand platform capabilities
• Communicate with you about updates, new features, and support
• Send automated abandoned cart recovery emails if you begin a checkout and do not complete your purchase (see Section 2a below)
• Detect, prevent, and address technical issues or fraud

2a. Abandoned Cart Recovery Emails

When you begin the checkout process for a shortshero product, we collect your email address. If you leave the checkout without completing your purchase, our payment processor (Creem) may automatically send you one or more recovery emails to invite you to return and complete your order.

• Recovery emails are sent on our behalf by Creem
• Your email is used solely for the purpose of completing your intended purchase
• Checkouts are marked as abandoned after approximately 24 hours of inactivity
• You can unsubscribe or opt out of these emails at any time using the link in the email

Legal basis (GDPR): Processing for abandoned cart recovery is carried out on the basis of our legitimate interest in recovering lost sales, balanced against your rights. EU/EEA users may also be asked for explicit consent where required by applicable law. You have the right to object to this processing at any time by contacting us at contact@shortshero.com

3. How We Store and Protect Your Data

Data Storage

Your data is stored securely using industry-standard practices:

• MongoDB Atlas — User accounts, video projects, credit balances, and settings (encryption at rest)
• AWS S3 — All uploaded videos and generated clips on secure cloud storage
• Clerk — Authentication and user identity (enterprise-grade security)
• All data transmission uses SSL/TLS encryption (HTTPS)

Data Retention

We retain your account and project data for as long as your account is active. Uploaded videos and generated clips are kept in your dashboard until you delete them. You can delete individual projects or your entire account at any time. After account closure, data is purged within 90 days.

4. Sharing Your Information

We do not sell your personal information. We may share your information only in the following circumstances:

Service Providers

We work with trusted third-party providers:

• Clerk — Authentication and user management
• MongoDB Atlas — Database hosting
• AWS S3 — Media storage and delivery
• Creem — Payment processing and abandoned cart recovery emails
• AWS Lambda / Remotion — Video rendering and export pipeline
• Inngest — Background job processing for video analysis pipelines

Legal Requirements

We may disclose your information if required by law, legal process, or government request, or to protect our rights, safety, or property.

Business Transfers

In the event of a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred. We will notify you of any such change and your options.

Access and Portability

• Update or correct your account information via Clerk
• Delete individual video projects and clips from your dashboard
• Close your account and request full data deletion

7. Children's Privacy

shortshero is not intended for children under 13 years of age (or 16 in the EU). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe we have collected information from a child, please contact us immediately so we can delete such information.

We use AI and machine learning to provide our core services:

• Your uploaded videos are processed by our AI transcription and clip detection pipeline to identify the most engaging moments
• Transcripts are sent through our AI analysis models to generate virality scores and caption data
• We may use anonymized and aggregated data to improve our detection algorithms and scoring models
• Individual video content is not used to train models without your explicit consent
• All AI processing is performed securely through our infrastructure

10. California Privacy Rights (CCPA)

If you are a California resident, you have additional rights under the CCPA:

• Right to delete your personal information
• Right to opt-out of the sale of personal information (we do not sell data)
